Moving Check List

6-8 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING DAY

  • Request relocation package from chamber of commerce of new town
  • Set the date for the move
  • Fill out change-of-address card with post office
  • Arrange for school transfer
  • Ask for doctor and dental referrals; arrange for transfer of medical and dental records
  • Get estimates for movers or rental truck
  • Schedule movers or rental truck
  • Determine furniture layout for new home
  • Make inventory of household items

4-6 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING DAY

  • Use up or dispose of food, cleaning supplies, and other household items that you don’t want to take with you
  • Have garage sale or donate unwanted items
  • Arrange for any house cleaning or painting in old or new home as well as carpet cleanings
  • Arrange for move of pets and plants
  • Arrange for utilities (cancel old; start new):
      • Electricity • Gas • Water/sewer • Telephone/DSL • Garbage/recycling • Cable/satellite
  • Arrange for transfer of homeowner’s insurance
  • Get packing materials: boxes, packing paper, tape, markers
  • Begin packing; mark all boxes with contents and room location

2-3 WEEKS BEFORE MOVE

  • Make family travel arrangements as needed
  • Service your car before move if you will be driving
  • Set aside critical documents and items to keep with you
  • Consider opening a new bank account in your new community; if you open a safety deposit box at the same time, you can move all vital documents and valuables into it ahead of time
  • Transfer prescriptions
  • Notify the following of change of address:
      • Family and friends • Subscriptions • Bank accounts • Creditors • Insurance companies
  • Continuing packing; be sure to mark the contents of each box

WEEK BEFORE MOVE

  • Close any accounts or stop any services
  • Defrost freezer, including emptying ice maker and ice cube trays
  • Clean refrigerator, stove, and oven
  • Disconnect and drain appliances for move
  • Drain fuel from power equipment
  • Confirm travel arrangements
  • Confirm arrival time of movers/pick-up time of rental truck
  • Clean house
  • Finish packing

MOVING DAY

  • Make certain your cell phone is fully charged and with you all day
  • Double-check that all cupboards, closets, dishwasher and other appliances are empty
  • Pack a box with everything necessary for first day in new home
  • Give movers instructions for what is being moved and location of items in new home

WITHIN FIRST WEEK OF MOVE

  • Check with local post office for any mail that is being held; ask for delivery to start
  • Open new bank account if you haven’t already WITHIN FIRST MONTH
  • Check state requirements of driver’s license and auto registration
  • Enjoy new home!
